Despite the rapid advances in science and technology over the last five decades, life is more complicated and problematic than it should be.
We live in a super-connected, high-tech world, yet we are more disconnected and isolated than ever. In this age of instant information, we are more overwhelmed and inundated than our parents and grandparents ever were.
It’s fair to ask, “What have we bought into?”
As a speaker, author and doctor, I’ve spent the last few years traveling around Australia speaking to thousands of people who are tired of feeling that their life is on hold. I have also gotten to know the barriers and blockages that stop them from living the life they deserve.
I hear every day how frustrated they are at being stuck in a rut, or worse, stuck in a job they hate. I know they just want to finally start doing what they’ve always wanted to do and start enjoying life again, which is what everyone wants, isn’t it?
But, unfortunately, most people I talk to don’t know how to get the wheels in motion. Or they feel overwhelmed in what they think is required to make the change.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. There is an alternative.
In Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland, 7-year-old Alice encounters the Cheshire Cat and asks which way she ought to go. The Cat ponders her question, then answers, “That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.”
Alice, though, tells the Cat that she doesn’t much care where. “Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” the Cat replies.
Although not obvious, the Cat’s answers, in fact, contain the secret to getting your personal and professional life back on track—clarity. You must first be clear as to where you are now, and then you must be clear as to where you wish to head.
These are your two minimum points of orientation, without which disorientation and confusion usually arise. This disorientation is the feeling that you’re going around and around in circles, going nowhere, and then getting frustrated at your lack of progress.
Brian Tracy, Chairman and CEO of Brian Tracy International, says this:
“Lack of clarity is the No. 1 time-waster. Always be asking, “What am I trying to do? How am I trying to do it?”
How, then, do we get clarity? How do we get clear on who we are, what we do, and how we do it?
