Session 2: Next Steps
Session 2: Task #1
Identify What You Really Want
This is not as easy as you may think, but I have developed a simple technique called The Lotto Test that can help you take your attention away from all the things you don’t want to do and bring all your focus onto that 1 thing that you really want to do.
The Lotto Test will help you identify that burning ambition that may have been pushed to the subconscious part of your mind and forgotten.
It does this by bypassing the need for money, which can distract you from thinking about your real ambitions because the bills need to be paid, you need a roof over your head, the kids need clothes, and other essentials that take priority.
The Lotto Test is simply this:
Imagine that you’ve won a billion dollars in the world’s richest lottery. What do you do now?
I assume you’ll have one heck of a party!
You’ll travel the world. You’ll buy huge mansions, luxury cars, designer clothes, expensive jewellery. You’ll buy all the things that money can buy, all the things you’ve ever dreamed of having. Because now you can.
But now I want you to project yourself four or five years down the track, after you’ve worn yourself out traveling and shopping, after you can’t bear the thought of another glass of champagne or celebrity party. What do you do now?
What do you do now that you’ve got it all and done it all? What is it you really want now that money is no obstacle? Is there something more you want to achieve? What do you dream of doing? Is there something you want to do for the rest of your life without wanting to retire from it?
I’m sure there is. I’m sure there’s some burning passion inside you just waiting for your attention. I’m sure there’s more to your life than having everything you could ever want.
What is it for you? What is that thing that money can’t buy?
Session 2: Task #2
Identify Why You Aren’t Doing It
If you’re not doing what you’ve identified you really want to do, why not?
This exercise, therefore, is all about your excuses, and you may have LOTS of them.
But I only want you to focus on the BIGGEST one you use.
With this in mind, I now want you to review the BreakThrough Journal that you’ve been using to identify the 1 Thing that is the biggest barrier to your effectiveness.
By now, you should have been keeping a record of how many times your red flag comes to your attention, such as your fears, avoidance behaviours, distractions, and negative feelings towards a particular task.
If you haven’t as yet been logging your red flags, download the BreakThrough Journal and over the next 24 hours or so log the times you make excuses. Try to identify any patterns that seem to recur.
For some, it’s going to the gym or doing exercise. For others, it’s doing the house chores.
For instance, do your red flags occur at any particular times of the day? Morning, afternoon, evening?
Are there particular days they occur, like weekdays or weekends?
These are the things you need to look out for when logging your BreakThrough Journal:
- What is your main excuse, negative thought or feeling, or avoidance behaviour?
- When do your red flags occur the most?
- Where do your red flags occur the most?
This exercise will reveal just how often and ingrained habits of ineffectiveness can be.
But once you are aware of your excuses and limiting behaviours, you can start to do something about them.
This is very empowering and will help you to become more effective and excel at what you do.
