Syntriology: Understanding Consciousness and Living Your Calling
What is Syntriology?
Syntriology is my philosophy for exploring Awareness/Consciousness through three connected perspectives: Reflection, Qualities and Relationship. Together, they offer a way to understand who we are and how that understanding finds expression in everyday life.
Finding and living your calling begins with recognising what matters to you, the qualities of your natural state of being, and the contribution you feel drawn to make. Syntriology brings these questions into your experience of work, creativity, relationships and service.
Three Perspectives on Awareness/Consciousness
1. Reflection: What does experience reveal?
2. Qualities: What is the nature of Being?
3. Relationship: How do we express who we are?
Reflection helps us recognise the understanding through which we experience life; qualities help us explore joy, fulfilment and freedom; relationship brings that understanding into how we live our calling.
1. Reflection: Understanding Through Experience
Awareness allows us to notice our thoughts, feelings and experiences. Through reflection, we examine the beliefs and images of ourselves through which we interpret life. Recurring reactions can reveal assumptions about who we are, what is possible, and what we believe we must become before we can live fully.
The mirror is a useful metaphor: what draws our attention, unsettles us or inspires us can help us understand our relationship with ourselves. This does not mean that we cause every circumstance or are responsible for the actions of others; it means that our response offers something we can explore.
In finding your calling, ask:
- What keeps drawing my interest?
- When do I feel most fully myself?
- What assumptions keep me waiting?
Reflection helps you recognise the direction already present in your experience.
2. Qualities: Recognising the Nature of Being
Qualities describe how we experience Being. Joy, fulfilment, and freedom are central to this exploration, alongside peace, love, and acceptance. Syntriology considers how these qualities become apparent when we recognise who we are, and how they can be obscured by the expectations and conditions we place on ourselves.
Joy may be expressed in creating, learning, or contributing; fulfilment in doing something that matters; freedom in living with greater honesty and choice. These qualities give us a way to explore our calling beyond achievement, recognition, or financial reward.
Ask:
- Which activities allow these qualities to find expression?
- What changes when I stop making my wellbeing depend entirely on a future outcome?
Difficult emotions remain part of human experience; living your calling allows room for them too.
3. Relationship: Giving Expression to Who You Are
Relationship is where our understanding of Awareness/Consciousness takes practical form. How we relate to ourselves, other people, our work and the wider world expresses what we understand ourselves to be.
Your calling can find expression through your interests, gifts and contribution: in a profession, a creative project, family life, friendship or service to your community. Listening, setting a boundary, sharing your work or helping someone can each express the qualities you value.
Ask:
- How can I bring greater joy, fulfilment, and freedom into this relationship or activity?
- What can I contribute now?
Living your calling develops through these everyday choices and the relationships they shape.
The Essence of Syntriology
The name brings together syn (together), tri (three) and -ology (study). Reflection, Qualities and Relationship are three connected perspectives on Awareness/Consciousness; each helps illuminate the others:
- Reflection reveals how we understand ourselves.
- Qualities help us recognise the nature of Being.
- Relationship gives that understanding expression in life.
You can return to any perspective whenever a question or experience calls for closer attention.
Syntriology is a philosophical exploration grounded in lived experience. Its purpose is to deepen self-understanding and support a life in which your calling and the joy, fulfilment, and freedom of Being find fuller expression.
Explore and Live Your Calling
Begin with an experience that matters to you. Reflect on what it reveals about your understanding of yourself; notice the qualities present or obscured; consider how that understanding shapes your relationships and contribution.
Choose one of these practical steps you can take today:
- Books: Being YOU! explores who you are and how you experience life.
- Writing: Read my articles for further reflections on calling, identity and living fully.
- Self-reflection: Take the Find Your Calling Quiz to explore where you are with your calling. No name or contact details are required.
- Speaking: Explore my speaking work on finding and living your calling.
Find Your Calling. Live Fully.
You do not need to have your whole life mapped out to begin. Start with the interests that draw you, the qualities you value and the contribution you can make. Reflection, Qualities and Relationship offer a way to explore those possibilities and put your understanding into practice.
